Offensive I'm not really a fan of early game, just get enough artillery for +5 and you're gonna demolish forts and you should be eliminating most forts in a nation the first time you beat it.īudget Monk is not min-maxing in the same way as you think. I think fitting in Espionage is a reasonable choice for most players in most games. 0.2 corruption is also a really big deal. Espionage is certainly a nice idea group, I've played it and it feels almost impossible to get coalitions outside of the HRE with it. And dip/mil points are mostly a waste of time, all you really care about is adm and you're only getting 2 per month. Due to the exponential advisor cost growth -75% advisor cost reduction puts level 5 advisors at roughly the same cost as level 3 advisors at -25% (using just the estate privileges). When it comes to actually blobbing Advisor cost reduction is a bit of an overrated bonus. I haven't done that, but I have eaten the whole HRE super early game just by allying every GP in Europe and forcing them to fight for me every 15 years. You can probably viably conquer the world without an army just by taking diplomatic->influence and getting allies to fight all your wars for you. I've done both of these and they are massively effective. If you are choosing very hard start then surely your best option is either to take Diplomatic/influence and get allies to do your dirty work for you or take a military idea group or two to help you win battles (disable the idea group restriction if you want to take them in a row).

I'm not sure why Innovative->Espionage helps you for that. Going by the video and posts so far, he's picking a specifically hard start and playing on very hard. Hmm, I'm not really understanding how you are supposed to play this. Regardless, my question is, what do you guys think? Do you see these idea groups as a the new meta? Or will you still be going for the likes of Admin and Diplomatic in a wide/World Conquest type campaign? I started playing around with these prior to Monk making these videos, but they made a lot of sense, and for example as Saxe-Lauenburg my siege ability and AE reduction let me explode to a far larger extent than Brandenburg did back on 1.32. The prestige decay and tech costs help too.

Consider that in the age of discovery, you can work with -30% AE reduction (which let's face it is huge). The advisor cost reduction and AE reduction also helps you snowball a lot faster with more monarch points and being able to take far more land. If you couple it with the government reforms providing yearly army tradition and professionalism, you can significantly speed up wars and defeat nations far larger than yourself by out-sieging them. The increased Advisor cost reduction, lessened AE, diplomat and siege ability all start to make these ideas make sense. This being said, 1.34 has changed things a little bit. As an exclusive wide player, my primary focus was getting down Admin, Religious, Diplomatic and Influence ideas. Prior to 1.34, I cringed whenever I saw someone take Innovative, and I thought that Espionage was completely useless.
